Hablemos de Insomnio

 

Para ello debemos  comprender la importancia del dormir bien, el ser humano invierte, por término medio, un tercio de su vida en dormir. Es una actividad necesaria, porque con ella se restablece el equilibrio físico y psicológico básico de las personas. La necesidad de sueño cambia, en cada individuo, de acuerdo a la edad, estado de salud, estado emocional y otros factores. El tiempo ideal de sueño es aquel que nos permita realizar las actividades diarias con normalidad.

 

¿Cuando hablamos de Insomnio?

 — Cuando los problemas de calidad y/o cantidad con el sueño, sobrepasan una intensidad que los hace intolerables. Se manifiestan como una dificultad para conciliar y/o mantener el sueño.

— Cuando hay dificultades en la capacidad de la persona para adaptarse a las consecuencias negativas que se derivan de esos problemas, provocando síntomas como:

  • alteraciones del humor
  • dificultad para concentrarse
  • somnolencia con dificultad para poder dormirse durante el día 
  • cansancio físico y mental
  • estado general de nerviosismo
  • tensión
  • ansiedad

 

¿Qué factores influyen en el Insomnio?

Entre los más importantes están: dificultades para manejar las emociones negativas, el estrés y el miedo a no dormir. En ocasiones, se podrían tener en cuenta, además, factores hereditarios o familiares y factores socio-laborales que pueden influir en la aparición del insomnio.

 

¿Cómo se diagnostica? 

Mediante una entrevista exhaustiva para poder identificar el trastorno y determinar la causa. En algunos casos, es necesario un estudio como acticrafía o polisomnografía. 

Una herramienta útil para el diagnóstico y seguimiento del  tratamiento es, completar un diario de sueño donde se registra diariamente los horarios de sueño.

¿Cuáles son los tratamientos más habituales?

  • Medidas de higiene del sueño: hábitos saludables de conducta para ayudar a mejorar el sueño. 
  • Intervenciones psicológicas: pueden ser individuales o grupales, con diferente grado de complejidad, orientadas al manejo y modificación de pensamientos y de conductas que mantienen el insomnio y/o sus consecuencias. 
  • Medicación: los hipnóticos son los medicamentos más utilizados. Es importante utilizarlos por un breve período de tiempo.

 

 

Algunas recomendaciones: 

  • Mantener un horario fijo para acostarse y levantarse. Los cambios constantes en los horarios de sueño aumentan la probabilidad de que se generen dificultades para dormir. 
  • Permanecer en la cama el tiempo suficiente, pero no más, adaptándolo a sus necesidades reales de sueño. 
  • Si ha pasado un rato (aprox. 30 minutos) desde que se acostó y sigue aún sin dormir, busque distraerse leyendo una revista o pintando mandalas, por ejemplo, hasta volver a tener sueño. El objetivo es que usted asocie su cama con quedarse dormido lo antes posible.
  • Realice ejercicio durante una hora al día y siempre tres horas antes de ir a dormir. Si se realiza ejercicio vigoroso en las 3 ó 4 horas previas a la hora de acostarse el sistema nervioso puede activarse y la sensación de somnolencia perderse.
  • Repetir cada noche una rutina de acciones que ayuden a prepararse mental y físicamente para irse a la cama. 
  • Practicar ejercicios de relajación antes de acostarse puede contribuir a que duerma mejor. Practique una respiración lenta y relajada.
